Judging from the laughter in this class at the Leave  Britney Alone video, I might be alone in my opinion about this video. If this class could have had a title, it would be “respect and persons”. A person is someone who deserves respect - whether that respect invovles their bodily integrity, their ability to make decisions about how they conduct themselves, their access to food and...

I thought this was a particularly good article. It examines “sex work” from the sides of cultural, radical feminism and liberal feminism.

This is an email from my cousin Rob who lives in New Orleans and is evacuating tomorrow. “I just wanted to let everyone know that I will be leaving tomorrow afternoon or early evening. They are about to issue a mandatory evacuation for all of southern La. This could be the storm that Katrina was not, a direct hit on the city of New Orleans. SO much has been done in the three years since...

Broken Glass and Intentional Communities
Broken Glass is beautiful, but it also punctures tires and kids cut their hands on it. {Think of the children!} Beauty is transient. It needs an appreciative observer in the moment it exists. Remember Jody Foster at the end of Contact? Eventually the broken glass will grind down into sand, and into everything again at the end of time. Our sunsets are beautiful from smog and pollutants. Poisonous...

A Ponderance on the Best Public Weirdness Can...
Can I point out something that I learned in linguistics class last week? Language is relative. Words are not just ways to name things that exist. Other languages might not even have the equivalent of our ‘weird’. There isn’t any real Truth, there are just different ways of experiencing our planet. Languages are arbitrary. Anyway, HP Lovecraft spent a lot of time figuring out...

Micah speaking off the cuff on Vimeo -I love the natural world in all its spiraling complexity, infinite sequences and arbitrarily perfect ratios. I don’t listen to so much music anymore, for all the listening to my surroundings. Replace your banal surroundings with this: idea that you do not have to exist your consciousness did not have to happen, it was chance and the fact that you can...

I thought this was a pretty cool website. It gives lots of tutorials and examples of cog and cam type machines you could build. I found this via a google search for Steampunk, and found the blog http://steampunkworkshop.com And a woman linked to the KMODDL site because she’s using it to help her build a mechanical beating heart for the Burning Man project.

BBC NEWS | Month without plastic →
I thought this was pretty cool - I know there’s a woman who’s going completely plastic free for life. Plastic is made from oil. Oil is a finite resource. We make a lot of unnecessary plastic. Plastic is good for us too. It helps preserve food, has helped medical advances. It’s sturdy and easy to clean. But could you do without it?

Remember back in elementary school where on days the teachers wanted a break they’d show us educational films about Sacajawea or the Rainforest? The historical ones were always Ken Burns style, never any animation or video, but the ones about the Rainforest and Acid Rain… those were intense. The warning they gave was this: unless ‘we’ -as in all the big grownups- stop...

We made pasta yesterday with this pastamaker from Diversity Thrift that cost $5. It was splendid pasta and very cheap, easy and fun to make. I’m all about finding nifty and useful kitchen gadgets for free and cheap. Raunchiness Is Powerful? C'mon, Girls →
Ariel Levy has got to be one of my new favorite people. This summer, I read her book _Female Chauvinist Pigs_ , which is basically about the rise of ‘Raunch Culture’ in the West, and womens’ involvement in it. Of course there are men involved in this uber-sexist raunch movement - they’re often the ones driving it, they are the primary consumers of its video output (think...

Current Projects and Defeating the Worm
I volunteer for WRIR’s local news collective, Homespun CSPAN. So far, I’ve recorded two events: an anti-war rally at the Richmond Times Dispatch, and a speech actor Kal Pen gave to young people and students working for the Obama campaign in Richmond. I even got an interview with Kal. I have yet to edit it down for the half-hour show. Unless I can get some tape of another campaign, it...
